"The Books Don't Balance" is the first episode of the webisode series The Office: The Accountants. It was written by Paul Lieberstein and Michael Schur and directed by Randall Einhorn. It aired on NBC.com on July 13, 2006.

Synopsis

The accounting department reveals to Jan that there is $3,000 missing. Jan assumes it is a simple accounting error, but Angela insists that it is not an accounting error, or at least not her accounting error.

In a talking head interview, Oscar notes that every time there is money missing, it has always been Michael. For example, Michael once claimed that he spent $50 on a client lunch but submitted a receipt from J. Crew.

Angela pointedly notices Oscar's expensive new watch, and Oscar explains that it was left to him by his deceased grandfather. Angela suspiciously notes that she's never seen it before, and Oscar explains that his grandfather died three weeks ago.
