"Phyllis' Wedding" is the 16th episode of the third season of The Office and the 44th overall. It was written by Caroline Williams and directed by Ken Whittingham. It first aired on February 8, 2007. It was viewed by 8.8 million people.

Cold open

Jim reboots his computer and offers Dwight an Altoid. He then reveals he has been using Ivan Pavlov's discovery to condition Dwight to expect an Altoid whenever he reboots his computer. As Jim reboots his computer again, Dwight unconsciously extends a hand expecting an Altoid and finds his mouth salivating.

Synopsis

Phyllis has asked Michael to push her father's wheelchair down the aisle at her wedding, a role that she gave him to secure six weeks off for her honeymoon. Michael is eager to participate, seeing himself in a "father of the bride" role, but is upset when Phyllis' father "upstages" him by walking the last few steps down the aisle under his own power.

Goaded by Jim, Dwight hunts down wedding crashers. He ousts Phyllis' uncle Al (George Ives), who fails to pass Dwight's questioning due to dementia. When Uncle Al is reported missing over the PA, Dwight realizes his mistake.

Michael makes several crude attempts to recapture the limelight, culminating with an overlong toast at the wedding banquet in which he impugns Phyllis' chastity. Outraged, Phyllis' husband Bob Vance throws him out of the reception hall. Dwight does not let him re-enter, taking satisfaction in being able to eject a real wedding crasher. Michael finds company with uncle Al, and eventually confesses that he is sorry for his behavior and worried that it may have sullied Phyllis' day, although uncle Al is only able to respond with aloof statements.

Pam is upset that many details of Phyllis' wedding, from the invitations to the wedding gown, were copied from her own canceled wedding, and is further rankled when her ex-fiancé Roy fails to recognize any of these details. Roy expresses regret over his lack of involvement in their wedding plans and pays "Scrantonicity", the Kevin Malone-led wedding band to play their song, "You Were Meant for Me". Touched by the gesture, Pam dances with him, and they leave together. Jim, who was flirting with Pam earlier in the reception, takes consolation in his relationship with Karen. When Phyllis leaves the reception hall with Bob Vance, Michael apologizes to her and she thanks him for finding uncle Al. The newlyweds ride off in a Vance Refrigeration van.

Extension of the "pungent" scene. Michael opens Phyllis' door while Bob is outside, allowing him to see her before the wedding.
In a talking head interview, Angela explains that she is offended by modern weddings.

Michael, for no apparent reason, tells Pam that "This is Phyllis's day, not yours."
Karen is addicted to her Blackberry.
Angela meets Dennis, Phyllis's veterinarian, a very religious man. The two bond over feline leukemia.
Michael asks one of Phyllis's bridesmaids for something he can use in his speech. She suggests, "She hates her boss" - which surprises Michael, since "Angela's not her boss."
Stanley and Teri don't appear to be enjoying themselves.
In a talking head interview, Dwight describes how he knows Uncle Al was a wedding crasher.
Michael takes Bob Vance's seat at the wedding table.
Creed explains wedding traditions to Oscar.
In a talking head interview, Oscar discusses gay marriage.
Michael asks Phyllis how he can help. She tells him to go to his seat. Michael takes Toby's date's seat, and Michael asks Toby how much he paid for her. In a talking head interview, Toby expresses frustration that nobody believes that they met at the gym.

In a talking head interview outside, Michael has a bitter imaginary telephone conversation with Phyllis.
Dennis takes his leave of Angela and asks for her telephone number. Angela tells him she's not interested because she's already having intimate relations with someone. Dennis apologizes. "Phyllis neglected to mention your promiscuity."
Outside the reception hall, Michael talks to the minister who mistakes Michael for a spurned suitor.
In a talking head interview, Michael explains why he didn't steal the minister's clothes to sneak back into the reception hall.
Meredith and Kelly say goodbye to Pam.
Michael sees Phyllis's father using a chair lift.
In a talking head interview, Michael talks about Phyllis and Bob as the couple get into Bob's van.

Trivia

Stanley's disgust at Jim and Karen bringing a toaster as a wedding gift is a callback to the episode Gay Witch Hunt in which Stanley laments being stuck with an extra toaster after Pam cancelled the wedding and returned the wedding gift he gave them.
When Phyllis is tossing the bouquet, you can see Ryan hit the flowers away from Kelly. Catching the bouquet at a wedding traditionally means you're next to get married.
Dwight mentions that his families marry while standing in their own grave this foreshadows his marriage to Angela where he does exactly that.
Although Pam's middle name is later revealed to be "Morgan" in "Did I Stutter?" the middle name printed on her wedding invitation is "Jane."
Jim reveals Bob's full name to be Robert, however in the wedding the officiant calls him "Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration."
Michael confuses "wedding" with "welding" and then "metals" with "medals."

Amusing details

Dwight doesn't seem to realize that the elderly gentleman he evicted was Uncle Al after the announcement was made.
When the priest says Bob Vance's name, he includes his company's name, "Vance Refrigeration". Bob does this as well when he introduces himself, and perhaps all the time, as he did so in Christmas Party.
Michael's speech appears to be written on a series of napkins.
Phyllis copied every detail of Pam's wedding as shown throughout the episode. Right down to hiring Kevin's band to play for the wedding as Roy does in "Casino Night".
As a child Michael yells "I hate you!" as he runs out of his mum's wedding to his step dad. He shouts the same when Bob Vance throws him out of the reception.
Jim says he finds Pam's dorky dance cute. Afterwards he smiles happily as Karen does a dorky dance on stage.
The ending scene before the credits show Phyllis and Bob Vance feeding each other cake just after Michael tells the camera crew he hears that in most weddings couples are fortunate if they can even get a slice of cake at their reception.

Behind the scenes

The wedding scenes were filmed at the First Christian Church of North Hollywood in Studio City.^[1] It is a very popular filming location due to its traditional architecture.^[2] Spoiler: It would later serve as the church where Angela takes Philip to daycare in a deleted scene from the episode "A.A.R.M.".^[1]

Cultural references

Altoid is a brand of breath mint.
Jim employs classical conditioning, a phenomenon first described by scientist Ivan Pavlov.
Always a bridesmaid, never a bride is a saying which means that a person always gets close to but never achieves her life goal. Michael applies the saying literally.
In Western tradition, the wedding is the responsibility of the bride's family. Phyllis opts for a traditional white wedding. Giving away the bride is a symbolic gesture traditionally performed by the bride's father in which he escorts the bride to the altar. The ringbearer is typically a young boy. The color white represents purity of heart and, in popular culture, virginity. According to the tradition of tossing the bouquet, the woman who catches the bouquet will be the next to be married.
Wedding Crashers is a 2005 comedy film about two men who attend weddings uninvited ("crash") to meet women.
The Princess Bride is an adventure comedy. Michael begins to quote a line from the movie.
In the early 2000s, it became fashionable to nickname a celebrity couple by combining the names of the two people. The first couple for which this was done was Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, resulting in the nickname "Bennifer".
Easy Rider was a 1969 movie about a pair of adventure-seeking motorcyclists. Michael's use of the term carries a sexual connotation.
The Boston Celtics are a professional basketball team. Robert Parish played on the team during the early 1980s.
Let them eat cake is popularly attributed not to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher but rather to Marie Antoinette. It is also infamously known as an example of ignorance rather than wisdom as Michael claims.
