Alex was Pam's friend at Pratt Art School in New York. He befriends Pam and seems to have a crush on her, according to Jim. He tries to convince Pam to stay in New York, leaving her conflicted between Scranton and Pratt. He, and Pam's other's friends go to the "Tiki Torch" in New York where Pam gets drunk.

Behind the scenes

Originally, Alex was intended to have a crush on Pam and be a potential roadblock for Pam and Jim. Fan reaction to this story line was overwhelmingly negative, and the writers altered the character's monologue in Customer Survey in response. Originally, his character was supposed to profess his love for Pam, but the speech was changed to be an encouragement for Pam to stay in New York and pursue her dream.[1]
